  A morning arrival in Melk offers ample time to visit the remarkable abbey, one of the finest in Europe and known for its distinctive yellow and white façade. Perhaps the best way to appreciate its grandeur is in the company of your Tour Guide on an optional tour.

  Returning to the ship for lunch, you set sail this afternoon, and cruise through the pretty Wachau Valley, a picturesque branch of the mighty Danube. Lush valleys, winding vineyards and rolling hills dotted with romantic ruins slip past en route to Budapest.

  You arrive in the Hungarian capital mid morning, when you can take the opportunity to wander amongst the marvellous parliament buildings and immerse yourself in this once divided city. Really get under the skin of Budapest on an optional sightseeing tour including the enormous St Stephen’s Basilica, the grand city boulevards and striking Heroes’ Square.

  For an insight into authentic Hungary, join an optional tour of the Puszta, the great Hungarian Plain which features prominently in local literature and legends. Serenade I sets sail at lunchtime and heads towards Bratislava overnight.

• Bratislava & Vienna - 6
  

  Bratislava, Slovakia’s beautiful capital, has a gentle and unassuming atmosphere. You’ll learn more about the city’s history and architecture on a fascinating optional sightseeing tour. Or visit the magnificent castle, dominating the skyline and providing a perfect viewpoint over the Danube Plain.

  You leave Bratislava at lunchtime and sail to Vienna.

  Enjoy a day in elegant Vienna, a city with so much to discover. Perhaps visit St Stephen’s cathedral, the Hofburg Palace or magnificent Schonbrunn Palace, summer residence of the Hapsburgs.

  You may prefer to see a little of the Austrian countryside on an optional tour to the Vienna Woods. You’ll visit the famous spa town of Baden, travel through the Helenen Valley to the former hunting lodge at Mayerling and on to the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz.

  Explore the pretty walled town of Durnstein this morning, known as much for its distinctive blue and white Baroque tower as for its wine. Why not visit the imposing castle that stands over the town?

  Your cruise continues to Linz this afternoon.

  You are free to relax and explore this vibrant city, a former European Capital of Culture. There will also be a wonderful opportunity to visit Cesky Krumlov in the neighbouring Czech Republic. Situated in historic Bohemia, it is one of Europe’s best preserved mediaeval towns and a genuine historical gem.

  Your cruise draws to a close today back in Passau. Those extending their holiday in Prague can relax on the coach journey, enjoying fabulous Bohemian scenery whilst a knowledgeable guide regales you with local history.
